Watering Swiss Cheese Plant

The best watering technique for the plant — First choose a pot which can manage drainage system means your pot should have some holes at the bottom so the excess water should pass out easily then give it such amount of water until it runs out of the bottom drainage holes of the pot. Now give few minutes break to your plant then water it again but you need to check the condition of the soil before watering it again.

By dipping the fingers into the soil one can easily observe whether to give water or not if fingers get wet then definitely not and if you feel some moisture then you can schedule it. The good thing about the plant is it is easy growing plant under various circumstances.

One important thing is that you should not provide excess water to it because overwatering causes root rot not only to this species can effect others as well. Swiss cheese plant do not demand much water so it is not necessary to water it regularly but giving water once in couple of days is good for better growth of the plant.

Lack of water is good option in comparison of too much or excessive water. And if you are not able to manage your watering schedule then it is more than enough to water it once in two days but overwatering is much bigger problem in comparison of underwatering it may cause root rot and if root rot occurs to the plant than it becomes very difficult to overcome from it.

So it is strictly advised not allow any of your plants to sit in water.

Temperature required for Swiss chees plant / Monstera deliciosa

The temperature between 65 degree F to 80 degree F is most suitable for the cheese plant. The temperature below 50 degree F is worst for the health of the plant.

The light required by this plant is partial or shady it is a species which does not demand for direct sunlight. However it can grow in both circumstances but you can notice the difference easily it is more comfortable in shady and partial light so you can put the pot of the plant in corner of your room instead of putting it on window. Two hours of morning sunlight shall be enough.

By nature the tree is a climbing tree and spends a good time sheltered from direct sunlight by the overhead canopy of the trees foliage. It’s a common observation related to tropical plants that they need indirect sunlight they are used to it.

Monstera adonsonii is the plant of humid tropical forests so it is very comfortable in mid to high humidity region. It enjoys the good level of moisture in the air.

If you are from humid region then it automatically becomes easier to care swiss cheese monstera but if you are not from humid and warm region and your home is surrounded by dry air then you may suffer to care monstera deliciosa.

Don’t worry here is the solution you just need to implement them.

Install Electric Humidifier — Humidifier therapy adds moisture to the air to prevent dryness. The average price of the device is between Rs 2500 to 6000 and above depends on the quality. It might be a costly option but it is one of the best option available to sort out the problem easily.

Don’t put swiss cheese plant under fan, AC or cooler as it is already mentioned that it is a humid tropical plant.

Feeding

A balanced or one with a higher proportion of nitrogen will help to encourage lots of new foliage growth. The plant required monthly fertilizer from early spring to late summer.

Usually liquid fertilizers are used for better results in comparison of other fertilizers when it comes about house plants. For the Monstera deliciosa a liquid fertilizer diluted to half of the recommended strength is good enough.

House plants are susceptible to fertilizer burn so it is always better to give your plant little fertilizer than too much or extra. Always remember access of anything is always dangerous so a plant with fed with less or very less fertilizer will be safer and healthier than a plant fed with more or extra fertilizer.

Pruning of Swiss Monstera Plant

You can prune the swiss plant at any time of year, whenever it gets out of shape while growing. When to prune monstera deliciosa adansonii plant regularly, I would say it takes three years to grow as a mature plant and after that it becomes necessary to prune adansonii regularly. One more advantage can be taken from pruning of the monstera adansonii is that you can use the stem for propagation instead of throwing them in waste. The only thing to pay attention is that you should cut the stems just after a leaf node.

Swiss Cheese Plant Propagation

Propagation of Swiss Cheese Plant can be done by two methods one seeds and other one is most popular and common method, from stem cuttings.

Seeds — Monstera deliciosa propagation can be done by seeds. However, the pocess of growing swiss plants from seedlings are extremely slow to develope. It can take almost around a year or more to deliver mature fruit from flowers

Cuttings — Monstera adansonii is more commonly propagated by stem cuttings. The cuttings of the particular plant are easy to root. Cutting always gives you options like you have the options of rooting them in water or sticking them straight into the soil. While taking cutting the most important thing is cutting should be taken from just after a leaf node, removing the bottom most leaves. It can increase the chances of your stem taking root.

It’s up to you whether to propagate the stem in water or directly into the soil. To propagate the Swiss plant in water you need on jar then fill it with half water and place it in a warm environment remember one thing it should be kept away from direct light. To help your plant to grow comfortably you need to change water every day it will keep it fresh and the problem of rot can be prevented and wait for roots to appear. It may take two or three weeks.

Wait for the roots to grow and once root grows you can transplant the swiss plant into a jar of soil. Most important don’t leave the cuttings (growing roots) of monstera too long into the water.

To propagate directly into the soil will also take same time to grow as it takes while propagating in water (three weeks).

Watering Problem

Watering problem is the most common cause of yellow leaves in Swiss Cheese Plants.

Watering problem is also of two types one over water and other one is under water lets check both the problems step by step -

First step to perform is to check the soil and if the soil is dry and the plant looks dehydrated with witting of new growth then you may be underwatering your Swiss Cheese plant

If the soil is soggy or drains poorly then overwatering is the likely problem.

Generally overwatering causes the yellow leaves, starting with the lower leaves first.

Low humidity

Low humidity may cause the leaves to turn yellow. As if we all know Monstera plant is a tropical plant so it prefer to have higher humidity. Although these plants can tolerate average home humidity for a while but long term lower humidity is not good for the health of the tropical plant so it may cause the leaves turn yellow and the ends to turn brown.

Lighting Problem

If you are living in the area where power cut is the problem then poor lighting condition in your may be another cause of yellowing leaves in your Swiss Cheese Plant. Swiss Cheese Plants prefer bright indirect light.

Don’t put the plant in direct sunlight the strong rays and heat may damage the plant by causing the leaves turn yellow and even brown. Please move your plant from direct sunlight to any corner of your room with filtered or shady light where it can live happily.

Temperature Stress

  • Tropical plants generally grows best when temperature are between 65–80 degree F (18–27 degree C ). When the temperature drops below 65 the plants growth will slow down.

Transplant Stress

If your Monstera deliciosa devlopes yellow leaves after you have repotted it, it might be suffering from transplant stress.

Disease

Diseases are most probable reason to turn the leaves yellow. There are various diseases that can cause Monstera plant to have yellow leaves. Few of them are — Anthracnose, Fungal Leaf Spots, Powdery Mildew
